They gain confidence as they recognize the Y as a place where they belong and can feel comfortable exploring new interests and passions.

Grace Persico played a vital role in creating sustainable systems for Oakland Unified Summer Learning Programs. By aligning district systems with the needs of our community partners, she increased the awareness of summer learning within the greater community, increased attendance and enrollment outcomes, and helped to bring our full service community school district vision closer to fruition.

CarMax LogoWe’ve seen CarMax’s commitment to the enrichment and healthy future of our communities first hand through the collaborative volunteer projects at our YMCAs and local schools. CarMax is built on a culture of integrity, teamwork and caring for one another. Mac Stuckey, President of CarMax Foundation notes, “It’s only natural that our culture of caring for others would include an interest in the issue of healthy living.”

West Contra Costa Region Community Partner Champion 

WCCUSD LogoFounded in 1971, Spectrum Community Services is a community based organization that assists low-income and disadvantaged individuals, families and seniors in their efforts to live independently. They offer a wide variety of community programs and services including Meals on Wheels, Senior Meals, Fall Prevention, Home Energy Assistance and Weatherization. Their long history of community programs has advanced Spectrum’s mission of promoting the financial sustainability and improving the overall quality of their client’s lives.

Oakland Athletics LogoThe Oakland A’s have supported the YMCA through the Little A’s program, which donates 500 tickets to games each summer, Zoo passes for our youth participants, healthy cooking classes taught by the Oakland A’s professional chef and the Fitness Sluggers program through which Oakland A’s players promote physical fitness to all of our camp participants. We honor the A’s as a valued partner in our work building community through Youth Development.

OUSD Office of Expanded Learning Volunteer of the Year

Bryant and Justine were instrumental in launching the Oakland A’s and Sutter Health Fitness Sluggers program, which was designed to promote healthy and active lifestyles among youth. In July, Bryant, Justine and their team led a two-hour athletic clinic for over 120 YMCA East Bay kids in Richmond to encourage every day play.

YMCA Camping Services Community Partner Champion

Greek Orthodox Church LogoEach year the Greek Orthodox Church contributes countless person-hours in volunteer work both at our work parties and at their pre-camp session. They have provided significant improvements to camp including brand new commercial kitchen equipment, a drinking fountain in the lodge, a gate to improve camp security, equipment to help with the installation of new fire hydrant lines, as well as providing contributions necessary to securing a grant for our current building project. They are a true partner that both utilizes our facilities but also invests in them.
