Questions about Supporting

the YMCA of the East Bay

For many children, families and adults in our communities, the Y is the safe and nurturing place they turn to for values-based programs and activities that provide encouragement and support in helping them reach their highest potential

You can make a difference in the life of a local child or family through a gift to the YMCA. Your charitable gift can impact the life of an under-served pre-school child, an idle teenager, a deserving single parent or an isolated senior adult. Whether you give to the Annual Campaign, make an on-line contribution, support the Kids to Camp campaign, a special event or contribute to the Y’s endowment fund, you can make an impact.

What is the YMCA?

The YMCA of the East Bay has served more than 18,000 people of all ages and provided more than $837,000 in financial assistance to local children, families and adults, enabling them to benefit from Y programs like child care, youth sports, aquatics, camp and teen development.

YMCA membership and programs are open to everyone. To the extent possible, financial assistance is made available to those in need, thanks to the generosity of the many friends and donors of the YMCA.

Why should I give money to the Y when I already pay membership dues?

Your dues cover the costs of Y membership, but they do not support additional costs for outreach programs and financial assistance. The YMCA needs your support in this campaign to reach into the community and provide safe, high quality, character-building programs for all.

Is the Y tax exempt?

Yes. The YMCA is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Can I designate a gift to a specific service area or program?

Of course! Your philanthropic goals are important to us. Just let us know which service area and/or program are nearest and dearest to your heart, and we’ll make sure your contribution is allocated accordingly.

Does the YMCA accept gifts in honor of, or in memory of a family member, loved one or friend?

Absolutely. If you wish to make an honorary or memorial donation, we will send personalized letters acknowledging the gift to the recipient or appropriate family members.

Are there other ways to give to the YMCA?

Yes. Gifts of stock, appreciated assets, charitable trusts, or gift annuities provide other options for investing in your local Y. For additional information, please contact our Advancement Services Department at 510.318.7639.
