Middle School: Model United Nations
The program allows middle school students to discuss global issues, explore cultures, and build life-enhancing skills.

About Our Program
MODEL UNITED NATIONS (GRADES 6th-8th) gives middle school students the opportunity to discuss international issues, discover other cultures, and develop life-enhancing skills. The 4-month program culminates when delegates from around the state convene for the Model United Nations Summit. There, delegates represent assigned countries as ambassadors and work to solve global issues with the skills they have acquired.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Students participate in the program through their local delegations. Delegations are formed through YMCAs, schools, or other youth-affiliated programs. Delegations are encouraged to host weekly meetings that typically begin in Mid-January, and are led by an adult Advisor. Within their delegations, delegates research, debate and establish policies, treaties and resolutions. Their main focuses are international issues, including disputes between countries, peacekeeping efforts, border crisis, stabilizing financial markets and dealing with hunger, disease and poverty.
Some groups may hold their weekly meetings virtually while others will be in person. This will depend on the local guidelines of each delegation so be sure to check with your local YMCA regarding their in person meeting policies.
How to Register for Youth & Government
Choose a Delegation or Join the Waitlist
Start by selecting your preferred delegation. If your first choice is full, you can apply through the waitlist to be notified when space becomes available.
Submit Payment
Log into your personal account to complete the program payment. You'll be directed to our registration system.
Register for Conference Sessions
Choose and sign up for required conference weekends and sessions. These events may take place outside your local area.

Delegations and Schedules
Delegations generally meet in rooms at high schools or local community centers. Delegations meet once a week in the afternoon or evening hours (3pm and later).

Statewide MUN Summit
Beyond weekly meetings, students join statewide events, connecting with middle schoolers from other YMCAs. The curriculum includes Model UN orientation, leadership workshops, public speaking, and cultural awareness. Delegates receive role training, meet program staff, and network with peers.
At the Model United Nations Summit, ambassadors step into UN roles, debating global issues and applying their research. This hands-on experience deepens their understanding of international affairs and leadership.
