About · E M Downer YMCA

The E M Downer Family YMCA is a branch of the West Contra Costa Region of the YMCA of the East Bay. The Y has been serving the greater Richmond community since 1918. We started out as the Richmond YMCA and were part of the Berkeley YMCA. We gained our independence in 1931 and took the name West Contra Costa YMCA. In 1990, we merged with the YMCA of Alameda County to create the YMCA of the East Bay Association.

From our humble beginnings in a small building on MacDonald Avenue, E M Downer Family YMCA in West Contra Costa is today the largest and most diverse branch in the East Bay Association. Our $15 million dollar operation has over 40 program locations which offer licensed early childhood and child development centers, after-school educational and enrichment programs, youth sports clinics and leagues, teen leadership programs, school-based health and mental health counseling services, support for military families and other community services that support and nurture youth and their families.

E M Downer Family YMCA serves all of West Contra Costa County including the cities of Richmond, El Cerrito, San Pablo, Pinole and Hercules as well as a number of unincorporated communities. We also administer child development programs in Alameda, Yolo and Sacramento Counties.
