YMCA of the East Bay
Youth and Family Development

Strengthening the academic ability and intellective competency of youth and families through literacy.

We will help to close the academic achievement gap in our region as we enable youth and their families to read, write, listen and speak skillfully so that they can fulfill their potential with a view of the common good.

YMCA Initiatives

  • Literacy:  Our mission is to promote positive child and youth development through activities that advance literacy.  We are integrating literacy components into our programs that include children and childcare.  We pledge to support our YMCA families in resources and programming that will foster a literate community.
Literacy: the ability to competently acquire, transmit and receive data (i.e. cognitive/ intellectual/emotional information, feelings) in multiple ways (reading, writing, speaking and listening) for positive and productive outcomes.

YMCA Partnerships

  • Community Solutions Network, Inc: Zaretta Hammond, Director of the Community Literacy Initiative, has partnered with the YMCA to 1) develop First WAVE’s literacy activities and games; 2) analyze and integrate practical and feasible literacy components into existing YMCA programming.
  • We partner with Junior Achievement, Girl Scouts, 100 Black Men, Girls Incorporated, Boys & Girls Club, and Americorps across our YMCA of the East Bay association.

YMCA Programs

  • YMCA First WAVE: A literary support component equips each 3rd grader with the reading skills necessary to become a successful reader.  We focus on reinforcing the skills they are learning in the classroom: word recognition, vocabulary development, and independent reading.
  • Y-Kids Care Program is a value and family-focused childcare program that nurtures children’s healthy development and academic enhancement. We offer a safe and diverse environment that models the character development values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • PreSchool YCare and Middle School YKids are offered at our Oakland Urban Services and Tri-Valley locations. We have various programs in many local schools. Elementary Schools: Hoover, Carl E. Muncke, Thurgood Marshall, Grass Valley, Think College Now, Prescott, Martin Luther King Jr., and Howard.  Middle Schools: Bret Harte and Kizmet Middle School Academy.
  • School Age YKids is offered at the Eden Area, Fremont/Newark, Oakland Urban Services, Tri-Valley, and West Contra Costa YMCAs.
  • Childwatch services are available free to those participating in aerobics classes.  Offered at select locations.
