Downtown Oakland YMCA swim lessons are a great way for kids to build confidence in the water. We are committed to teaching one of life’s most important skills: water safety. For more experienced swimmers, our swim lessons will help you take your skills to the next level. We also provide Family and Recreational Swim and Porpoise Swim Club opportunities. 

Youth Private Swim Lessons

Private Swim Lessons are a great way to get started or give you the extra boost needed to achieve your swimming goals. Fill out a request form at the Welcome Center to be paired with one of our excellent teachers.

Youth Group Swim Lessons

Our program is all about confidence, endurance and competency in swimming. We expect each child to learn and progress at his or her own rate. Each class will have up to 6 students and is 30 minutes long unless otherwise noted - package rates, class levels and schedules are listed below.

Session Dates & Registration

We are able to provide children the opportunity to build confidence in the water year round with our 25 meter indoor pool.  Swim Lesson sessions are most often 8 classes, with holiday weekends often the reason for variation. Register early for our Early Bird pricing!

Package Information

Session fees are due at the time of registration. Please note, fees are non-refundable and non-transferable and there are no make-ups or credits for missed classes. However, in the event a session is canceled by the YMCA, we will we will provide make-up classes and refund and/or transfer fees. In the event of pool closure, the YMCA reserves one (1) day of safety instruction. While we do our best to maintain consistency, illness and scheduling conflicts may cause a change in instructors.

Class Levels

Our instructional classes follow the YMCA Progressive Swimming program. Each level of our youth swim lessons covers five basic components: Personal Growth, Stroke Development, Personal Safety, Water Sports & Games. Please let us know if you need any assistance in choosing the right class level for your child. 

Shrimp (30 minutes, parent/child: ages 3 months–3 years)

Help your little one adjust to the water in this organized playgroup. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents and spend quality time with your child. Parents learn to work with their children in the water. Class focuses on safe water exploration with the help of songs and games. Parent participation required.

Perch (30 minutes, parent/child: ages 2 –3)

Perch is a pre-Pike class for swimmers who are not old enough to be in the Pike class, but have mastered the Shrimp level. In this class you work with your child to begin to develop independent skills like kicking and gliding. Children should have taken the Shrimp class or be wait to age into pike. water. Class focuses on safe water exploration with the help of songs and games. Parent participation required.

Pike  (30 minutes, new beginner: ages 3–5)

Instructors help children learn to be comfortable in the water while guiding them in basic skills such as blowing bubbles, gliding, floating and kicking. Students have fun in the water with peers while building a foundation for swimming. This class is suitable for children with no swimming experience.

Eel (30 minutes, beginner: ages 3–5)

For the child who has advanced from Pike and can put their head underwater with ease. Eels are encouraged to be more independent by practicing skills such as gliding, floating, kicking and freestyle.  Students and Instructors work together to build swimming confidence.

Ray (30 minutes, intermediate beginner: ages 3–5)

Students at the Ray level begin to develop backstroke and elementary backstroke while having fun and being safe in the water. Swimmers build confidence swimming freestyle independently for several meters.

Starfish (30 minutes, advanced beginner: ages 3–5)

Swimmers increase their swimming ability by adding side breathing to freestyle. Instructors guide students in improving back stroke and elementary backstroke while learning safety skills and having fun!

Polliwog (30 minutes, beginner: ages 6–12)

For youth who cannot swim independently or are afraid of the water, Polliwog instructors help students feel comfortable and master basic skills such as gliding, floating, kicking and freestyle. Come learn to swim in a nurturing environment!

Guppy (30 minutes, intermediate beginner: ages 6–12)

Students have fun in the water while learning to be more efficient swimmers. This level is ideal for swimmers who completed or aged out of our Starfish class.

Minnow (30 minutes, advanced beginner: ages 6–12)

Students in Minnow are learning fundamentals of swimming freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. This level is ideal for students wishing to build endurance by swimming full laps and refining basic skills

Fish (30 minutes, intermediate: ages 6–12)

Fish have been introduced to all four strokes and continue to build swimming endurance. Breaststroke and butterfly technique are emphasized in this class, and swimmers are challenged to swim farther to increase endurance.

Flying Fish (30 minutes, advanced: ages 6–12)

Swimmers in the Flying Fish class have a basic knowledge of all four stroke and can swim several laps without rest. This class emphasizes stroke technique and endurance.

Porpoise Swim Club (One hour: ages 6–12)

The YMCA Porpoise Swim Club introduces youth to the sport of competitive swimming. The club focuses on personal best and team sportsmanship rather than competition. Practices focus on endurance, fitness and stroke development. Participants must have successfully completed and passed the Flying Fish or Shark swim levels. Or, participants should have competence in all 4 competitive swim strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) and should be able to swim 100 meters (4 lengths) without stopping.
